George Dimopoulos, the researcher who showed that tweaking the Rel2 protein in A. stephensi turned on the insect’s immune system after a blood-meal, had also done similar work in A. albimanus. In his proof-of-concept studies, he discovered that artificially increasing or decreasing Rel2 caused certain immunity genes of A. albimanus to turn on or off, respectively.
