Anopheles albimanus is the most important Anopheles species for malaria in Africa. While researcher are still working on stabilizing chronic infection of Wolbachia in Anopheles, in this Collection, many strategies used somatic infection of Wolbachia to battle Plasmodium, and therefore malaria.
A group led by Steven Sinkins at the University of Oxford found that simply introducing the life-shortening Walbachia bacterial strain wMelPop was enough to activate the parts of the mosquito’s immune system that affect whether an infective parasite will live or die within the host.
